BIRMINGHAM, AL - Today is expected to be the busiest travel day of the 4th of July weekend, and extra efforts are being made to ensure Alabama drivers stay safe.

AAA predicts more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Independence Day weekend. Because of that, there will be an increase of state troopers and local law enforcement agencies on state roads.

State Trooper Curtis Summerville says this is not a “money making” event for Alabama. According to Summerville, speeding is the number one cause of fatal crashes in the state, and nearly 70 percent of people killed in crashes in Alabama last year were not wearing seatbelts.

“We want to change behaviors,” Trooper Summerville said. “If we can get you to wear your seatbelts, not speed, not drink and drive, do all of those things that you’re supposed to do behind the wheel, and we not write a single ticket, then we’ll be perfectly happy at that point.”

Summerville says drivers should be reminded of the “move over” law for emergency vehicles and pay special attention in construction zones. Officials say sleep deprivation during holiday weekends is also a concern.

The bottom line: Stay safe b staying alert, obey all traffic laws and have a great holiday weekend.
