The Lyric Theater honored some individuals today who have been long-time supporters of the arts in Birmingham, including efforts to restore the city’s historic Lyric Theatre.

Two Lyric Leading Light Awards were given out this morning.

The first award honored Keith Cromwell, Raymond Harbert and Kathryn Harbert. Cromwell is the Executive Director of Red Mountain Theater Company. Raymond Harbert is the Chairman and CEO of Harbert Management Corporation. His wife, Kathryn, is a community volunteer and philanthropist.

The three recently received two 2014 Tony Awards for their collaboration of the Broadway production The Bridges of Madison County.

The second Lyric award honored Louise H. Beard. Beard was a producer of A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder, which also received a Tony Award.

The four recipients have played a key role in the restoration of the Lyric Theatre.

“At one time Birmingham had 26 theaters in downtown Birmingham,” said Tom Cosby, fundraising consultant from Birmingham Landmarks, Inc. “Some have event said that back in the 1920's, Birmingham was considered one of the five top theatre cities in the nation. Both the Harbert’s and the Beard’s have joined the city of Birmingham and many others in making a substantial donation to help assure that funds are available to properly restore this historic Lyric Theatre.”

Mike Royer will feature the progress of the restoration of Birmingham's Lyric Theatre in his next Spirit of Alabama report. Be sure to tune in Tuesday, July 8 for Alabama's 13 News at 10:00 p.m.
