What does Target’s stance against guns mean for Alabama?

Posted: Updated:
Target is the latest company to come out and ask their customers not to bring firearms inside their stores. This week the company released a statement explaining their decision.

It read in part:

This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-        friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create.

The company thinks guns will disrupt their family-friendly environment, but not everyone agrees. Eddie Fulmer is the President of the gun rights group Bama Carry, an organization that reaches 12,000 people state-wide.

If you see Fulmer out, chances are he’s openly carrying a firearm. "I have yet to see anybody show any kind of fear or emotion,” Fulmer explained. “Mostly what I get, 99.9% of the time is ‘hey man I really appreciate you doing that.’"

And even now, if Fulmer visits his local target, his second amendment right isn’t restricted. Target’s statement is not a prohibition or a ban, it’s simply a request.

Fulmer says Target’s stance on guns doesn’t change anything. "You know I can request somebody do anything. But basically they're not going to put up any signage and their going to follow state law, which means in Alabama, if you want to walk in their store with a gun you can," Fulmer said.

The company says they’ll continue to follow local gun laws, but if that changes, Fulmer says the company would be well within their rights.

"It's their property. It's public property because it's open to the public and you go in with all your rights and privileges. However, they can restrict you anyway they want."

For now, Target says they hope their customer’s will voluntarily comply with their policy.
