How to help save thousands of Fort Benning jobs

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce has come up with a form letter residents can sign and send to the United States Army with the hope of generating support to save thousands of jobs ahead of pending military cuts.

The Chamber has taken to its Web site and Facebook asking residents to let their support be heard. As WRBL News 3 has reported, the pending military budget cuts and scale down could cost Fort Benning about 14,000 jobs and $1.4 million in economic loses, an army study estimates.

In 2013, the Chamber helped created enough support to save about 7,000 jobs. The Army had been considering removing the 3rd Brigade from the Chattahoochee Valley.

The newly proposed cuts would take affect between 2015 and 2020 if enacted.

You can learn more about the Chamber's efforts and download a copy of the letter on the Chamber's Web site.

WRBL News 3's David Hurst will have more on the public response to the proposed cuts starting on WRBL News 3 Evening Edition at 6/5c.
