BIRMINGHAM, AL - Here’s a quick look at your top five headlines for Tuesday, July 08, 2014.

1. The mother of a 5 year-old who was reported missing yesterday may soon face criminal charges in the case. A family member told police she took 5 year-old Jaderian Holloway from his mother at a gas station Sunday night because she was intoxicated. The boy’s mother did not remember what happened and reported him missing to police. The child and his 14 year-old brother are now in the care of DHR while police investigate.

2. Authorities are now seeking the medical records of 22 month old Cooper Harris. Harris died last month after he was left in a hot vehicle for several hours. His father, Justin Ross Harris, faces murder and child cruelty charges in last month’s death.

3. The man who held five Chelsea Middle School girls hostage at gunpoint has been committed to a mental institute. Yesterday, a judge found 22 year-old Ryan Sims not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

4. Shelby County School leaders are looking to adopt new safety measures to protect students. Montevallo Elementary has a new entrance that requires all visitors to check in at the office before heading into the school. The new safe schools initiative includes collaboration with law enforcement, safety reviews of buildings and safety drills.

5. The Hoover Police Department has written 344 tickets since starting a zero-tolerance campaign on June 29. The initiative began after several deadly accidents on I-459 and I-65. Police say 170 of the citations handed out were for speeding.
