KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -

A Knightdale woman paralyzed in a freak accident at her bachelorette party in 2010 is ready to move the next stage of her life – motherhood.

Rachelle Friedman said even on the night she was paralyzed she asked emergency workers if she could still have a baby. She was told yes but found out later that wasn’t the case.

"I hoped that I would be a mother, but I was scared and still am scared because there's lots of things that I won't necessarily be able to do,” Friedman said. “I can't, you know, it's mostly fun stuff I think about. I can't run around the beach with my child. I can't take them on a hike, like I always wanted to do."

A college friend has stepped in to be her surrogate mother. That will relieve much of the cost but Friedman and her husband Chris will still have thousands in bills, mostly for a lawyer.

The couple has a GoFundMe page to raise $25,000 to help with those bills.

They have already raised more than half of that.

Friedman now works as a motivational speaker and has written a book.

Friedman has a signing event for her book called "The Promise” this weekend at a Barnes & Noble in Greenville.
