RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina’s teacher of the year met with lawmakers Tuesday to discuss the state’s budget and teacher pay.

James Ford was recently voted the state’s teacher of the year but he was at the Legislature to talk on behalf of teachers with House Speaker Thom Tillis and Gov. Pat McCrory.

Ford distributed a letter that said he does not support the Senate’s budget because of its elimination of teacher’s assistants and teachers tenure.

Ford instead supports McCrory’s and the House’s proposal.

“I think the major objective with that letter is to highlight the fact that whenever everybody, including the governor's plan and the House and Senate talking about teacher pay increases that says something about the recognition of the value of making teaching and attractive and sustainable career option,” Ford said.

At the end of the meeting, McCrory said he does not support a budget that would eliminate teacher’s assistants.
