A Vance County woman whose 11-year-old grandson shot and killed his grandfather says she is living out her worst nightmare.
Lloyd Woodlief, 84, was shot and killed by his 11-year-old grandson Monday after deputies said the man shot the boy's father.
"It's the most horrible thing that can happen to any human being," Ann Hedgepeth said.
Hedgepeth said her son-in-law told her grandson, Daniel, to shoot his grandfather if Lloyd Woodlief shot at him first.
"He put a shell in the shotgun and he says if he shoots me, you shoot him," Hedgepeth said. "So Daniel picked up the rifle and shot Lloyd in the arm and he bled to death."
Vance County Sheriff's deputies say the 49-year-old who was shot by his father is now recovering at Duke Medical Center.
The grandson was taken away in handcuffs and leg irons, Hedgepeth said.
Funeral arrangements are being made for Lloyd Woodlief by family members.

Family members say the man who fired the shots was not the same Andrew "Jay" Michaelis they knew.
