TUSCALOOSA, AL -

A crime spree that spanned two counties has put two men behind bars.

It began when an elderly Tuscaloosa man was kidnapped Thursday night around eleven o'clock.

He managed to escape about 30 miles down the road in Bibb County.

The 79-year-old man was waiting to pick up a friend from her shift at the Shell gas station on McFarland Boulevard near interstate 20/59. That's when investigators said Joshua Cameron and Chirag Patel kidnapped him.

Sgt. Dale Phillips Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit said, “He appeared to be just an opportunity that arose for these two individuals. There is nothing that he was a target of anyone.”

According to investigators Cameron and Patel held the victim at gun point. Phillips added, “The victim tried to maneuver his car for her to see from inside the store maybe and was not allowed to do so by the suspects.”

Phillips said they forced the victim to drive across the street where they got behind the wheel of his car.

When the suspects stopped in Brent to grab a drink, the victim seized the opportunity. The victim was able to escape and get help at a gas station near Wal-Mart.

The suspects took off in the victim’s car. Patel was arrested a short time later. Cameron is accused of trying to steal another car and shooting someone in Bibb County while trying to escape police. He was later arrested. The victim was not injured during the kidnapping.
