The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who doused his former girlfriend with gasoline, then lit her on fire.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, about 2:30 Sunday morning, deputies responded to a house fire on Nellie Anderson Street in Edgewater. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from severe burns all over her body. She was taken to a hospital where she is listed in serious condition.

Witnesses at the scene told investigators that the victim had been in a relationship with 48-year-old Michael Kennedy of Mulga. According to them, Kennedy and the victim broke up last month, but he came to the residence Sunday morning. The two started arguing and Kennedy poured gasoline on the victim and lit her on fire. Kennedy fled the scene before deputies arrived.

Kennedy was seen leaving the area in the victim’s gold 2000 Ford Expedition, with the license plate #1B11H83. The Sheriff’s Office says they have reason to believe Kennedy could be in the Western Birmingham area or Huntsville.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Michael Kennedy, you are urged to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
