Here’s a quick look at your top five headlines for Monday, August 04, 2014.

1. The first American Ebola patient arrived in the U.S. over the weekend to begin treatment at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. The medical missionary contracted the virus working in Africa. The second American with the virus is expected to arrive tomorrow.

2. Residents of Toledo, Ohio are starting a third day without water because of high toxin levels in the city’s water supply. According to the National Wildlife Federation algae in Lake Eerie is seeping into the intake pipes.

3. The Maylene mother charged with reckless murder for the death of her 19 month old son is scheduled to be back in court today. Shelby County authorities found 22 year-old Sommer Nicole Wilford standing outside her wrecked and burning SUV on Highway 119 in February. Firefighters found the body of Wilford’s 19 month-old son Jayden inside the vehicle.

4. The new Helena High School is officially open following Sunday’s ribbon cutting ceremony. The Shelby County School board and the city of Helena have been working together to make the school a reality since 2012. High School students in Helena formally attended Pelham High School. School starts Thursday.

5. More than 100 students in our area will get free backpacks filled with school supplies today. The second annual backpack giveaway is this morning at 9:15 at Children’s South Outpatient Center. The giveaway is sponsored by the Vestavia Kiwanis Club and Children’s of Alabama.
