Kendrick: "Our opponents might want to get ready"

Posted: Updated:

The Kendrick Cherokees don’t want to talk about last year.

Normally that’s a sentiment reserved for teams that struggled the year prior. That’s not the case for Kendrick, which made the playoffs for the first time in several years.

“The pressure is coming from ourselves,” said head coach Jerry Dukes. “We don't want to fall backward. We want to go forward. We want to keep climbing that mountain. The thing we always tell the kids, Kendrick High always had tradition."

Dukes doesn’t play coy with how he plans to keep that momentum: Run the ball, and run it a lot.

“This year we’re going to be more of a power team,” he said. “We're bigger. We have some running backs that are almost 300 pounds, and they can move, so our opponents might want to get ready. We're going to pound."

The Cherokees do boast a large front line.

“Across the front line, everybody is bigger than 300 (pounds) and all of us are benching more than 300,” said senior lineman Ryan Pearson. “We're just going to pound the ball, drive everybody out the way, and we're just going to score a lot of touchdowns."

“To be successful you have to run the ball successfully,” said senior LeAnder James. “I think having us on the line, with our size and our experience--because pretty much the whole line is seniors--I think it's a big advantage for us."

Kendrick opens the season Aug. 22 against Stewart County at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
