The Samford football team returned to the practice field with two workouts Wednesday at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs practiced in full pads in the morning, and again in shells in the afternoon.

The practices were the 11th and 12th workouts of fall camp. Samford running backs coach Kodi Burns said the team is continuing to make progress toward the season-opening game at TCU.

“Today was okay, we still have a long way to go,” Burns said. “We're about 17 days away from playing TCU. We're making strides, but we just have to keep getting better each and every day.”

At running back, the coaches must replace All-American Fabian Truss from last season. Burns said senior Jeremiaha Gates has been a leader for the group during camp so far.

“Jeremiaha provides a lot of leadership,” Burns said. “He's been here four years, and he does a really good job. He's played a lot of football, he has a lot of experience and he can teach these young guys a lot. I look for him to be the leader, and I expect a lot of him.”

As a junior, Gates played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs, rushing for 238 yards and a touchdown. Gates said the running backs are working hard to be ready for the season.

“We had another installation day today,” Gates said. “We had a couple of missed assignments, but once we get those assignments down, we'll be full speed with a high tempo and playing physical football.”

Samford will open the 2014 season on Saturday, Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs play at TCU. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
